Red Routemaster London bus stop

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of our most frequently asked questions.  If you can't find the answer you are looking for, simply contact us via the link below and we will do our best to get back to you ASAP.

Q. Which areas do you operate in?

A:  We have operating bases in Buckinghamshire, Surrey and Kent from where we operate our heritage buses and coaches throughout London, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Kent, Surrey, Sussex and North Hampshire.

Q. How far can we travel by bus or coach?

A:  Routemaster buses were designed for city driving and not for speed.  A top speed of 38-40mph does not make for a swift journey.  A journey of 70 miles in each direction would be about the limit for a Routemaster.  This would take almost 2 hours each way, excluding any traffic delays!

Longer distance travel would be best served in our classic AEC Reliance coach.

Q. How many passengers can I take?

A:  You can take as many as you like!  Each bus carries a specific number as outlined below:

  •   Routemaster - 62

  •   Routemaster Lengthened - 74

  •   AEC Regal (RF) Single Deck Bus - 39

  •   AEC Reliance Coach – 39

  •   Dennis Dart – 39 (or 36 + 1 Wheelchair)

You may hire one or any combination of different buses and coaches, or one bus can make several trips, dependent on time and distance.

Please remember that buggies, wheelchairs, bags and photographers also take up seat space!

Q. Can we have our name on the front of the bus?

A:  Yes of course you can.  Personalised destination blinds with your personal details or message can be produced but we will need time to manufacture them.  When your trip is complete you can keep them as a souvenir.  Please remember to complete this request when making an inquiry and we will calculate the cost.

Q. Are the buses safe?

A:  Absolutely - Although they are registered as historic vehicles, and around fifty years old, they have to go through the same regular safety inspections and maintenance as all modern buses.  They are also required to meet all of the VOSA inspection criteria and have a full M.O.T.

Our buses and coaches are exempt from having seat belts, but your safety is important and we do not permit passengers to stand on the open rear platform whilst the bus is moving.

Q. Do you have wheelchair ramps and or disabled access?

A:  Our heritage buses and coaches are of an old design, which is not as accessible as modern vehicles for those with restricted mobility.

However we are able to offer a single deck London Bus with a low floor entrance and wheelchair ramp together with one wheelchair space.  Although this lacks the kerb appeal of the older Routemasters it is offered as an alternative for groups requiring wheelchair access and/or as a second bus offering a cost effective way of carrying larger groups.

Q. Can we have a champagne toast on-board?

A:  Cheers! Yes you can (excluding some sporting events which prohibit alcohol).  We supply plastic flutes and service by our bus crew, you supply the champagne.

We charge a small fee for corkage and do all the washing up afterwards, along with recycling all the bottles!
